Video Games: Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland

May 18th, 2005 · 4 Comments

We picked up the link for this off of Yahoo! And it looks pretty rad.

Here’s the next iteration of the skateboarding game in the Tony Hawk universe. The Tony Hawk brand and its extensions (Birdhouse) have garnered mad respect and made millions for developers at Neversoft, distributor Activision, and Mr. Hawk himself.

Click on the link to the video and you’ll be greeted with the bassline intro to the Dead Kennedy’s California Uber Alles. Then, you’ll get a preview of the game.

The big twist with this version of the game is that instead of going from one location to another (as you had in previous versions of THPS), the game takes place in one long seamless world: Los Angeles. The gameplay looks the same, but the Ellay streetscape and details look incredible.

As with previous versions, the game is completely personalizable – you can choose your skater and what they wear and ride. (We’re especially glad to see the original Dogtowner, Tony Alva, join the line-up, along with the return of my personal favorite from THPS2 Bob Burnquist.)

As for the name, the Tony Hawk brand already stands for a high quality product that never veers far from the skateboarding and gaming universes. Add the apocalpytic American Wasteland moniker and you have a memorable and killer combo.

(Perhaps it’s no surprise that American Wasteland.com is a site that claims to be “a commentary on the spiritual vacuity of American Culture” last updated in 2002. How much you want to bet most of the kids that type in “Americanwasteland.com” will go “Huh?” when they see the site and are expecting Tony Hawk?)
