Medical Device Brands: Medgadget Summary 5.27

May 27th, 2005 · No Comments

Here’s a look at the brands that were featured on Medgadget this week. We’ve included our usual commentary.

Lifestraw’s water purifying straw for the Third World (or travelers)

Medem’s iHealthRecord – A great idea for a product. But the name is stuck in the late 1990s. We thought i-Something names died with the dotcom boom.

Sunshine Heart Company Pty Limited C-Pulse Heart Failure Device – a cardiac assist device that sits on the belt. Sunshine Heart is a great name. C-Pulse Heart Failure Device is too much of a mouthful to make any meaningful impact. Back to the naming board.

Vascular Technologies’ Vein Entry Indicator Device (VEID). This name tells you what the device does. Too bad the acronym couldn’t have been VEIN.

BÂRRX Medical, Inc.’s Halo 360 device for dilation and ablation procedures for Barrett’s esophagus sufferers. This is an awesome name because it is NOT descriptive. It also gives you a sense that you are going to quickly and completely complete a procedure. However, it does compete with one other non-medical Halo: Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, the video games.

UC Logic’s LaPazz D-Note digital note recorder. This seems to be a crowded marketspace but this name is mroe than a little confusing. Is it the La Pazz? Or the D-Note? As in “doctor’s note.” La Paz (without the spastic double z) would be a much better name on its own.

Canica’s ergonomic scapel. A beautifully designed cutting tool. Do you think Canica knows their name means ‘marble’ in Spanish?

Olympus capsule endoscope. As yet, unnamed. This could be a fun one to name.

Prostalund’s CoreTherm ablation therapy for benign prostatic hypertropy. Someone must’ve thought that Prostalund was a good company name. Perhaps, they should rethink that.

TelaDoc Medical Systems’ immediate medical advice, diagnosis and prescriptions by physicians for consumers 24/7. This might be the perfect service if you can’t find a Viagra site to prescribe you the little blue pills. Otherwise, the name, TelaDoc sounds too literal to be interesting. Yet, there are likely plenty of people out there ready, willing and able to tell their doctor everything…

BodyMedia’s HealthWear System to predict your health. Do you think they knew that a sub-genre of music is called electronic body music?

With the exception of Sunshine Heart and Halo, overall, it was a sad week for medical device branding.
