Founded in 2001 by Karl Schmieder, MS/MFA, an award-winning writer and strategic communications professional, messagingLAB has provided marketing and communications strategies for private and public companies that have raised millions of dollars in investments and sold millions of dollars in products. We often operate as the Chief Marketing Officer for companies that need strategic communications and marketing direction.


Karl operates the firm, delivers strategy, and writes copy. When needed, messagingLAB relies on a network of world-class freelancers to complete projects. Our goal is to develop long-term, strategic relationships with our clients. Our current client roster includes relationships that range from 1 year to nearly 6 years (average 3.25).

KARL SCHMIEDER, M.S./M.F.A., has been providing strategy and communications counsel services to life sciences companies for more than 20 years. A rare combination of scientist and award-winning copywriter, Karl has a long tenure working with both startups and Fortune 10 life sciences companies developing technologies that disrupt markets. He has counseled multiple startups, launched major pharmaceutical brands (Risperdal, Januvia, Lucentis), and created thought leadership programs for executives at GSK, Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics, and PAREXEL. He served as Chief Marketing Officer at One Eleven Software and Chief Strategic Officer at Medikly. He is the co-author of What’s Your Bio Strategy? a book on the impact of synthetic biology on all business.


SUSAN RENSBERGER is an accomplished writer and marketing strategist with more than 35 years of experience in communications planning and writing for corporations, entrepreneurs, universities, and healthcare organizations. Her work encompasses corporate communications, marketing, public relations, employee and crisis communications, investor relations, customer and prospect relations. Previously, she was a speechwriter for a U.S. Vice President.
